Polytrichum piliferum vokser ofte i små tuer eller tæpper på tør, næringsfattig, gerne sandet bund. Den kendes på de opefter noget sammentrængte, grågrønne, langt hårspidsede, helrandede blade. De stærkt farvede, vinrøde hanlige skud har pga de øverste omdannede blade et blomsterlignende udseende. Kapslerne på 1-3 cm lange stilke (seta). Arten er udbredt og almindelig i Danmark. Kan forveksles med Polytrichum juniperinum, der ligeledes har helrandede blade, men mangler hårspids.
